great ferro rods, and produce a lot of spark for very little strike. I keep one of these with a striker in the kitchen so I can still start our gas stove if the power goes out. If you need good kindling, I would recommend soaking some cotton balls in Vaseline, puffing them up a bit, and using this to light them. Half of one cotton ball will burn for a couple minutes, they’re water resistant, and you can use a bit of the Vaseline to keep your ferro rod from rusting.

I threw a small piece of cord through the hole and called it a day. Does the job as expected. I used with a knife, and did not purchase the accompanying striker.
